COMMENT
Apologies for yet another disappearing act!
For the last 18 months I have suffered from skin cancer on my forehead.
After 2 operations and Radiotherapy I believed I had beaten this nasty affliction.
But no. Another skin nodule appeared since June at the bottom of my head wound.
This was duly removed mid-August.
The biopsy results indicate the cancer remains.
So now I am on a different route to overcome this disease.
I am starting a course of Immunotherapy from 13th October.
A decision has now been made on remastering and upscaling my pre HD Movies.
As we are starting from scratch, it will be a few weeks before we see results.

WHAT DO WE HAVE IN THIS UPDATE?
A rather unusual event has just occurred.
Under a programme called ‘VHS Lates,’ a screening was held at the
Institute of Contemporary Art’s cinema in London last night
25th September featuring ‘Wet and Messy’.
3 excerpts from the WSM Vintage Films were shown.
I have been questioned about WSM Productions.
So here are the questions plus my responses:
1. Please could you introduce yourself to our audience.
There are 2 types of Wet and Messy enthusiasts: participators and voyeurs.
As a voyeur i have looked out most of my life for WAM photos or movie scenes.
By 1980 it was apparent that nothing was going to occur.
I was a middle-class guy in a middle class job with a house, wife and two children.
So all the pressure was………leave this alone.
But in 1981 aged 40 i gave it a go!
2. How did you first come across wet and messy fetishism (sploshing) and when did you realise there was an audience for it?
One comes across wet and messy material by seeking it out.
To the best of my knowledge there is still a personal divide on this quest for WAM.
One group says you are born with it and it is part of your DNA.
The other says you are entirely influenced by events in your life.
In my case I would support the latter.
Believing you can achieve something and make people happy along the way is a
daunting prospect with a blank piece of paper!
WSM is dedicated to spreading knowledge of our fetish.
We are unashamedly educational and each shoot implicates a ‘try this’ philosophy.
And how do you explain the contradictory aspect i.e. men will love it and most women
loathe it?
So part of our introduction in our very first Brochure published in 1981 needed to be
explanatory.
Here is part of what was written:
“We thought long and hard about our content material.
Glamour girls have a certain sanctity and we were dubious about extending our sphere to
slapstick and mud-larking situations.
But, treated in the correct manner, which we believe to be a good humoured, fun
situation.
Our models have banished our qualms with their enthusiasm for our topics.
Why should TISWAS steal all the glory on a subject as old as Laurel and Hardy?
Our reservations have departed and we unashamedly devote ourselves to our subject.
Not to debase women, but to depict their glory in a different and specialised way.
If you are after sadism and humiliation – don’t buy our sets, there is none – just a light-
hearted approach to at times unusual situations”.
Having scoured magazines and newspapers for many years, we expressed the outcome
as: “How many disappointing attempts or oddment shots have you seen in men’s
magazines?”
This was obviously (and still is) a minority fetish.
How big was the market?
Only one way to find out by launching a business.
So in December 1981 ‘Wet Shots’ was launched.
In 1984 this became ‘WSM’ promoting Wet, Slapstick and Muddy play.
3. Was there already a captive audience and community for sploshing when you
began, or did you build it from scratch?
Who else was involved?
No database existed when we commenced.
No community existed.
The word ‘Sploshing’ was not coined until the late 80’s by Bill Shipton.
No address lists were ever transferred between providers to maintain confidentiality.
So we built things from scratch.
I had a partner in Stoke-on-Trent for the first 3 years. He suffered health problems then
retired.
Then I had a partner in Peterborough who continued to the mid 80’s then suddenly
disappeared!
Since then, I have worked alone until a gradual integration with Custard Couple since
June 2011.
I did have great assistance from Professor Treacle, commencing 1984, who was an
enthusiastic follower.
We liased on scripts and ideas and the Prof was a participator.
Professor Treacle sadly emigrated at the end of 2004 just as camcorders were emerging.
But he has left us with ‘The Magnificent Seven’ being XXX movies.
4. Walk us through what a sploshing shoot actually involves – crew, setup, cleanup.
Having shot sets between 1982 and 2018, the nature of shoots changed over the decades.
There was also a good percentage of outdoor shoots which are radically different from
those indoor.
So unless you are more specific this would be a major exercise.
5. Do you remember any particularly fun shoots? Were there any disasters?
The whole purpose of WSM was that it should be sexy fun (Yes – always involving
eroticism).
We pushed in many different directions but it was always very enjoyable.
No-one did anything that offended their own principles.
I suppose just as every picture tells a story, then every shoot had its own magic
moment(s).
Any disasters?
We took far too much slapstick materials into the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool in 1988.
We were discovered and ejected from the Hotel and barred from revisiting.
Some lively lad picked up on this rather interesting story.
But he failed to follow up his leads.
The next day the ‘Daily Mirror’ had headlines of ‘Rivers of Beans’.
But they were unable to trace the source……..as we quietly laughed at their
incompetence.
A far bigger disaster was losing shot movie material.
Between May 2013 and Sept 2018 we lost:
1 movie due to faulty camera – WSM156.
Two thirds of another movie – WSM197-CC75
A further 6 movies lost due to managerial incompetence by my studio manager!
WSM183, WSM260, WSM262, WSM273, WSM274, WSM275.
But for all 8 shoots, we do have the captured image sets.
6. What did a typical budget for a shoot look like?
Once again you need to be time specific.
The period up to 2002 was mainly 35mm shoots apart from the 9 WSM Vintage Films.
Our cameraman was ex BBC and had his own very expensive camera.
Otherwise, I shot 15 movies by various camcorders from 1991 to 2004.
So, what was the constraining factor then?
Time! As I worked full time until my retirement in 2006, then shoot opportunities were
hard to come by.
In July 2005 I stated shooting at Yorkshire Studios in Keighley finishing with the studio
closure at the end of 2018.
I still have detailed costings from 1st January 1998 to date.
It is best you choose a movie if you want an idea of costs.
7. How did you sell and promote your videos in the 80’s and 90’s?
Rather difficult as there was no internet and sexually worded adverts were shunned.
We launched through a series of Brochures – we published 7 in total.
We did advertise in various papers and magazines, especially TitBits.
Don’t fall about laughing as this was a popular magazine at the end of the 20th century.
There were other minority producers, so it was of interest just to know who they were.
David Wilkey of Bath was the foremost producer of Wetlook in the UK.
Our main HQ in the 80’s and 90’s was Tenby in South Wales.
Another good friend Roger Carpenter lived there.
Roger promoted the 1st ever Wet and Messy weekend get togethers for both producers
and devotees.
In 1987 Bill Shipton appeared at Aquantics 87 to commence a new magazine called
‘Splosh’.
This eventually had 40 issues.
We also had Rob Blaine from Texas visit us in the 1991 Aquantics get together.
And Roger Carpenter put together a series of ‘Collections’ of available WAM (wet and
messy) material.
Sadly, we have now lost all 3 of these pioneers: Bill Shipton in 2013, Roger Carpenter
2019 and David Wilkey 2025.
8. What has been your experience of censorship over the years?
In the period from 1980 to 2010 there was formidable control from the BBFC (British
Board of Film Classification).
There were several amendments made to our 9 Vintage Films shot between 1985 and
2000.
Each of those Films required a BBFC certificate before any distribution.
With the internet, BBFC lost their control and adult fetishism drifted until Age
Verification was finally enforced in the UK in July 2025.
9. We really love that comedy and laughter are so central to the sploshing content
from that period.
Can you tell us a little more about where this came from and the relationship
between humour and erotics?
We set about making a series of videos based on humour, approachability and possible
simulation in people’s lives.
We were a team, always looking for a gag line. Bill Shipton was our professional
writer.
For example, in Vintage Film 2 ‘The Great Outdoors’, we ended by featuring Slapstick
by getting an ordinary girl to sing.
Melanie starred in our very brief spoof of the “One Cornetto” ice cream advert.
After having quite a few cornetto ice creams thrown at her, she was eventually on the
receiving end of a traffic cone filled with ice cream!
Then one of our team came up with the gag line, as Melanie then looks the camera in the
eye and says, ‘I did say, just one cornetto!’
But sometimes we intentionally wrote erotic scripts.
A good example would be ‘The Hairdresser’ shot in 2004 as Professor Treacle as a
hairdresser, attempts to give the client everything she wants.
Some great confusion on when she should ‘come again’.
And being a woman Tiffany espies some different lotion, which she wants……..only to
be told that it is the Prof’s lunch!
But always…….eroticism prevailed.
If it was not erotic, we did not publish.
10. How would you like your contribution to the sploshing culture to be
remembered?
Sadly, we were early pioneers and so our work suffers from inferior presentation
(compare VHS to 4k digital video).
There have been distinct jumps in resolution, clarity and technology.
However, one can only mark a certain period of time.
Our current website states that ‘We are now in our 45th Year of Continuous Trading’.
‘We are the oldest WAM business in the world!’
As an appetiser for the fantastic world of Wet and Messy, one can only look at the
present completed offerings of the WSM movies and wonder how this magnificence
was achieved by one man (with no dog).
We have done our best to promote and encourage this foray into this specialized world
of fetishism.
We introduced jingles and songs to our Vintage Films.
What resulted is there for people to enjoy and excite their own senses.
And most importantly, our participants enjoyed it all too!
